Trail Updates

Trail 17: Little Sheep Mountain – Updated 7-28-24 – Free GPS Track Download here

We recommend using the free GPS tracks and traveling this trail with multiple vehicles. Trail 17 has high grasses in the trail and eroded sections causing parts of it to be very hard to see. The second half of this trail has changed dramatically due to washouts and is for the adventurer who wants an off the beaten path that includes navigating large washouts. The trail is still rated a 3/4.

Quick Overview of Updates for Trail 17: (see below for details)

1 — Vehicle requirements have changed.

2 — One spur in the trail is impassable now.

3 — Second half of trail is now full of washouts.

4 — Changes to book directions.

5 — Bail out options for second half of the trail.

1 — New Vehicles Requirements for Trail 17

The first half of the trail is still stock Jeep Wrangler equivilent with 33" tires. For the second half of the trail, we now recommend a Jeep Wrangler with lockers, 2 inch lift and 35 inch tires or equivilent. Airing down for traction is also recommended.

2 — The spur headed east from Junction–A that leads to the train tracks has been washed out beyond safe travel and is now impassable. See updated QR code map (scanned from the map for Trail 17 in the book) for a digital map showing the impassable road location.

3 — Hard spring rains have dramatically changed the trail. There are more washouts, places with large holes in or near the side of the road, and bypasses needed.

4 – Two major differences that are not in the book are: (updated free GPS tracks & QR code map reflect these changes)

Page 85, Mile 4.4 – The road is now washed out. Drop into the wash, turn left, drive through the wash for a half circle, exit wash and continue on the road crossing the wash one more time.

Page 85, Mile 5.0 – The washed out area that required a 90 degree turn to the left and bypassing a washed out road is not required at this time as the washed out road has recently been repaired.

5 – There  is an opportunity to leave the trail before arriving at the major washouts and the second half of the trail. The GPS tracks show two options to exit the trail before the major washouts and one option to leave the trail shortly after the major washouts. This will shorten the trail considerably. From Junction–A area, traveling south will lead to the Georgia-Pacific Gypsum plant and a highway. The GPS tracks will show these routes as: Bailout 1, Bailout 2 and Bailout 3. Bailout 1 is the easiest option. Bailout 2 bypasses the major washouts but is not as easy as Bailout 1. Bailout 3 does NOT bypass the major washouts but still allows an exit to the Georgia-Pacific Gypsum plant. These three exit routes are on the updated digital map accessed by scanning the QR code on Trail 17's map in the book.
